Overview:

Pawnbrokers must maintain compliance for all elements of business, especially when dealing with firearms, machineguns, silencers, and other explosive devices. This course provides an introductory overview of the compliance responsibilities related to firearms. The course begins with a general description of what a Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (BATFE) compliance inspection entails and your responsibilities before, during, and after the inspection. The course also explains how to identify red flags that may indicate straw purchases and how to avoid falling prey to this type of illegal scheme. The course continues with an essential description of what types of firearms may legally be carried by a pawnbroker under the National Firearms Act (NFA), and the associated requirements and regulations for each type of weapon. The course lists several Federal and State requirements for holding, purchasing, and reselling of firearms.

  • Describe what is involved with BATFE compliance inspections and special investigations.
  • Explain what a straw purchaser is and how to avoid straw purchases.
  • Identify your obligations regarding several common types of firearms, the applicability of the National Firearms Act, and the associated regulations regarding firearms and pawn shops.
  • State several additional regulations and requirements of which pawn shop employees must be aware.
  • Successfully complete several scenario-based situations regarding pawn shops and customers wishing to pawn or purchase firearms.
